A 23-year-old woman was raped Sunday by a man who let himself in through an unlocked door in an Annapolis-area home where she was workingas a nanny, county police reported.

Investigators said the children were not in the house, in the 1800 block of Ritchie Highway, when the woman was attacked between 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

"She had taken a shower and was drying her hair when she saw the guy standing in the hallway," said Sgt. Robert Jaschik, head of the county police Sex Crimes Unit. The man ordered her to lie face down onthe floor and pinned her arms above her head and raped her, Jaschik said.

The rapist had no weapon and was in the house for only a short time.

The woman did not call police immediately, Jaschik said. Instead, he said, she finished cleaning the house, did the laundry and went out to get a soda.

When she returned, she locked herself ina room until the homeowner arrived and called police at about 4:50 p.m.

Jaschik said the crime is an unusual one in the established neighborhood, which is near Route 450 and the Severn River Scenic Overlook. Many of the residents are elderly and have lived in their homes for years, he said.

"We have had no sex offenses in the area like this," Jaschik said.

Police described the man as white, about 30, 6 feet tall with a stocky build. He was clean-shaven and had dark wavy hair. He was wearing blue jeans and a green short-sleeve shirt.

Anyone with any information about the rape should call the Crimes Against Persons section at 222-3450.
