Beauties and beasts

It's your call

February 24, 1992

No animated feature has ever won an Academy Award for Best Picture -- until now, if callers to SUNDIAL have their way. The Disney hit ''Beauty and the Beast'' got 182 votes as Best Picture, substantially better than callers' second favorite, ''The Silence of the Lambs,'' a beauty and the beast movie at the other end of the entertainment spectrum. ''Lambs'' received 129 votes for Best Picture. ''JFK'' was third with 117 votes, followed by ''Bugsy'' with 67 and ''The Prince of Tides'' with 52.

Fans of ''Terminator 2: Judgment Day'' slightly outnumbered naysayers as 278 callers thought that huge moneymaker should have earned a nomination while 243 thought not.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.
