Junior Gabby Linarducci capped a record-breaking performance by No. 14 Towson State (14-2) with a school-standard mark of 9.85 for floor exercise, as the Tigers recorded a school-record 190.80 points in beating New Mexico, 187.05, and Vermont, 177.90, in women's gymnastics at the Towson Center yesterday.
Linarducci not only broke her school record, but became the first Towson State gymnast to better 9.80. At the finish, senior Wendy Weaver (38.60) and Linarducci (38.40) eclipsed Weaver's school-record all-around mark of 38.375. Wendy Chalmers (37.25), a sophomore transfer from Alabama who had won the all-around in last week's Towson State Invitation, was third.
Freshman Joan Reitz also got into the act with a school-record 9.80 in the vault. Weaver held the old mark, 9.75.
Weaver claimed the all-around with scores of 9.70 on bars, 9.60 in vault, 9.65 on beam, and 9.65 on floor.
New Mexico was hampered by the loss of its top two all-around performers. Freshman Veronica Lopez injured a knee during her floor routine and had to drop out of the competition, and junior Tonya Pellegrini hurt her nose on the beam.
