UMBC ends 3-game skid, 81-66

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- UMBC broke a three-game losing streak, defeating Central Connecticut, 81-66, in an East Coast Conference game last night.

Derell Thompson scored 24 for UMBC (8-17, 7-3). Skip Saunders added 17, and Sonique Nixon had 15 points and 15 rebounds.

The Retrievers trailed 50-45 with 13:27 remaining in regulation, then outscored Central Connecticut 17-2 to gain the lead at 62-52. Central Connecticut closed to within 63-59 with 6:06 left, but the Retrievers went on a 7-2 run, to pull away.

David Corbitt scored 24 for Central Connecticut (5-19, 1-8), which built a lead as large as 39-31 in the opening half.

UMBC -- Thompson 7-13 8-9 24, Watkins 3-9 1-4 7, Andrews 3-6 2-2 8, Harris 1-6 2-2 4, Saunders 5-9 4-4 17, Ferguson 2-4 2-2 6, Wright 0-2 0-0 0, Nixon 5-10 5-9 15. Totals: 26-59 24-32 81.

CENTRAL CONNECTICUT -- Williams 3-8 0-0 6, Leichner 0-2 0-0 0, Smith 7-13 2-2 16, Johnson 3-16 5-6 11, Corbitt 9-15 5-5 24, Rybczyk 2-7 0-0 5, Francis 2-5 0-0 4. Totals: 26-66 12-13 66.
