February 23, 1992

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Georgia Tech's Jon Barry, silent most of the game, awoke in the closing minutes to rally the Yellow Jackets (17-9, 5-7) over Virginia (12-11, 5-7).

Barry had eight of his 11 points in the final 10:07, as Georgia Tech came back from a 36-31 deficit to win for the second time in six games.

Bryant Stith had 25 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals to almost single-handedly help the Cavaliers break their four-game losing streak to Georgia Tech.

Stith moved past Phil Ford on the ACC career scoring list, but in the end, it was Barry's show.

Barry's three-pointer tied it at 43 with 4:48 to play, and he put the Yellow Jackets ahead to stay with another three-pointer at the 1:50 mark that made it 50-47.

Stith hit a baseline jumper with 57 seconds left to cut it to one, but James Forrest responded with a 15-footer with 16 seconds remaining to account for the final margin.

Virginia's Doug Smith missed a three-pointer with three seconds left, and Georgia Tech's Matt Geiger grabbed the rebound and killed the clock.

Stith is four points behind of the league's No. 6 all-time scorer, David Thompson of North Carolina State. He had 2,309 from 1973-75. North Carolina's Ford had 2,290 from 1975-78.

Stith outscored Georgia Tech 11-6 over the last 8:45 of the first half to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to 24-23 at halftime.

Stith had 15 points in the half, in which Georgia Tech shot 52 percent compared to 28 percent for Virginia but turned the ball over six times in the last 10 minutes.

Barry, who leads the Yellow Jackets with a 17-point average, had one point after a first half in which he missed both field-goal attempts.
