Baseball Chicago Cubs -- Agreed to terms with P Chuck McElroy (6-2, ERA) and C George Pedre on one-year contracts.

Cincinnati Reds -- Agreed to terms with P Chris Hammond (7-7, 4.06), P Gino Minutelli (0-2, 6.04), P Ross Powell and IF Freddie Benavides (.286 in 63 AB) on one-year contracts.

Colorado Rockies -- Signed SS Mauricio Gonzalez and assigned him to Rookie League Mesa.

Detroit Tigers -- Agreed to terms with P Mike Henneman (10-2, 2.88 ERA, 21 saves) on a one-year contract for $2,437,500. Henneman, who made $1.1 million last season, had sought $3 million in arbitration; the club had offered $1.7 million.

Kansas City Royals -- Agreed to terms with SS David Howard (.216, 1 HRs, 17 RBI) and P Mike Magnante (0-1, 2.45 ERA in 55 IP) on one-year contracts.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Agreed to terms with P Darren Holmes (1-4, 4.72 ERA) and P Kevin Brown (2-4, 5.51) on one-year contracts.

New York Yankees -- Agreed to terms with P Lee Guetterman (3-4, 3.68 ERA, 6 saves) on a one-year contract for $1.6 million. Guetterman, who made $1.05 million last season, had asked for $1,895,000 in arbitration; the club had offered $1.3 million.

Texas Rangers -- Arbitrator awarded 1B Rafael Palmeiro (.322, 26 HRs, 88 RBI) $3.85 million, rather than the club's offer of $2.35 million. Palmeiro made $1,475,000 last season.

Northwest League -- Class A league announced the purchase of the Yakima Bears by Tradition Sports Inc. from D. G. Elmore of Bloomington, Ind.

Basketball

Charlotte Hornets -- Waived G Cedric Hunter.

Dallas Mavericks -- Traded C James Donaldson (6.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg) to the Knicks for F Brian Quinnett (3.1 ppg).

Golden State Warriors -- Signed Kenny Battle to a second 10-day contract.

Seattle SuperSonics -- Signed F Tony Brown (5.7 ppg in nine games on a pair of 10-day contracts) to a contract for the remainder of the season.

Lone Star Conference -- Disqualified Texas A&I women's basketball team from the postseason tournament because it had scheduled more than the permitted 28 games.

Drexel -- Named Randy Voigt and Lowry Wear assistant directors of men's athletics.

Jackson State -- Announced the resignation of W. C. Gorden, football coach, to become athletic director.

Missouri -- Suspended John Little, men's swimming coach, and Matt Wade, swimmer.

Pittsburgh -- Promoted Sal Sunseri, linebackers coach, to assistant head coach and Nick Rapone, secondary coach, to defensive coordinator.

Quincy -- Announced the resignation of Sherrill Hanks, athletic .. director, effective May 31.

San Diego State -- Promoted Bret Ingalls, offensive line coach, to offensive coordinator.

Widener -- Named Bruce D. Bryde athletic director, effective March 6.

Football

Detroit Lions -- Signed free agents QB Greg Jones, OT Jack Linn and OT Sheldon Haliburton. Announced that Jones, Haliburton, DB Herb Welch and DE Willie Griffin will be allowed to play in the WLAF.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Agreed to terms with P Dan Stryzinski.

Arena Football League -- Announced that the Dallas Texans have

been purchased by Kent Kramer and Greg Gibson.

Hockey

NHL -- Fined North Stars F Brian Bellows $500 for complaining to the media about the officiating after a game Feb. 5.

Minnesota North Stars -- Recalled D Richard Matvichuk (eighth selection overall in last year's draft) from Saskatoon (WHL).

St. Louis Blues -- Recalled G Pat Jablonski from Peoria (IHL).

San Jose Sharks -- Signed D Tom Pederson and assigned him to Kansas City (IHL). Recalled C Dale Craigwell and LW Jean-Francois Quintin from Kansas City.

Toledo Storm (ECHL) -- Acquired G Mark Romaine from Raleigh for cash. Traded D Greg Bignellto Richmond for cash.

Colorado Foxes (APSL) -- Re-signed D Steve Eise.

Fort Lauderdale Strikers (APSL) -- Signed M Omid Namazi.
