Run DMC member's rape trial opens with conflicting accounts

February 21, 1992|By Knight-Ridder Newspapers

The rape trial of Run DMC member Joseph Simmons opened yesterday in Cleveland with the prosecutor saying that the rapper disoriented his accuser by plying her with pot and alcohol before attacking her Aug. 9.

But Mr. Simmons' lawyer described the 22-year-old woman, who said she went to the performer's hotel room to get his autograph, as a drunken, frenzied fan who was not raped but would seek financial gain if Mr. Simmons was convicted through a civil suit.

Kim Basinger, meanwhile, won undisclosed libel damages yesterday from a London tabloid that reported a year ago that the movie star was a cocaine addict.

A Daily Express lawyer said the paper had printed an apology.
