Man gathering litter finds mystery bones

February 20, 1992|By Lan Nguyen | Lan Nguyen,Staff Writer

It had crossed Daniel Sheets' mind Sunday that what he found -- an object resembling a bleach bottle -- could have been a human skull. He'd found it on the side of Scarboro Road near Dublin in northern Harford County.

Worried that he'd be ridiculed, the 35-year-old construction laborer didn't say anything about it until the next day as he drove to work with a friend. That night they went to the wooded area where Mr. Sheets had been collecting road litter as a community service project for a drunken-driving conviction.

The two concurred that the object could be only one thing: a human skull.

Near the skull they found more bones crumpled in a moss-covered carpet in heavy underbrush, about 15 to 20 feet from the road near the Scarboro County Landfill. They reported the find Tuesday morning to landfill administrators, who reported it to police.

The bones have been taken to the state medical examiner's office in Baltimore for tests. Police suspect the case may involve homicide, but are awaiting the medical examiner's report before confirming it, according to detective Sgt. Jordan Watts.
