Race For Basketball Title Comes Down To The Wire

February 19, 1992|By Glenn P. Graham | Glenn P. Graham,Staff writer

It looks like the county boys basketball race comes down to the wire, with three teams entering this week with just one loss.

A key matchup takes place Friday with Liberty at Westminster.

The Owls, which gave South Carroll its first county loss Friday, had the upper hand going into the week with a 4-1 mark. South Carrolland Liberty, which played each other last night (after press time), were both 3-1 going into this week's action.

All five Owls starters reached double figures in Friday's win against South Carroll and look to have the same balanced scoring this Friday to offset Liberty's one-two punch of forwards Mike Davidson and Matt Alexander.

Davidson, the county's leading scorer, averaging 18 points a game, had 25 last Friday in a win against North Carroll. Alexander added 17 in the win and ranks third in the county with more than 15 points a game.

In other sports this week:

* There's only one wrestling match, but it's a big one, at Francis Scott Key tonight. The Eagles will battle the Smithsburg Leopards of Washington County for the Monocacy Valley Athletic League dual-meet title.

Both come in with 5-0 league marks. The Eagles are 8-1-1 on the season in dual match action -- theironly loss coming at the hands of North Carroll.

* The North Carroll girls basketball team will close out its regular season slate tomorrow with a home date against South Carroll.

A win over the Cavs could help push the Panthers past Glenelg or Allegany for one of the two top seeds in the Class 2A-1 region. The top two seeds receive first-round byes in the region playoff.

A win over the Cavs also may clinch the county title, pending the outcome of the Panthers game against Westminster Tuesday (af

ter press time).

North Carroll began the week 14-6 overall and 5-0 in the county, needing only one win to clinch.

* The Western Maryland men's basketball team will close out its home schedule tomorrow against St. Mary's. The Green Terror women will play their final regular season game at home Saturday against Elizabethtown.
