50 Years Ago (week of Feb. 15-21, 1942):
* A 21-year-old Howard County man was arrested this week for refusing to register for the draft. He was arrested by FBI agents at his home on Montgomery Road nearElkridge. The man stated religious reasons for not registering. Whenarraigned before U.S. Commissioner James K. Cullen, he was advised by Cullen that he could register as a conscientious objector and thereby obtain a deferment, but the man stood by his refusal to register.
* The family of James Macgill of Atholton received confirmation this week of his arrival in the Middle East war theater. Macgill was one of a group of 99 Americans volunteering to serve without pay as ambulance drivers in the battle zone. The group had begun its journey before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
