A Frederick man killed his estranged wife and her mother yesterday in Boonsboro, then drove to visit his parents in Montgomery County before fatally shooting himself as police closed in, authorities said.

Hugh Michael Buttry, 47, of the 5800 block of Rose Bay Court, died at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville shortly before 8 p.m. He had shot himself once in the head, said Ann Evans, a Montgomery County police spokeswoman.

Mr. Buttry is believed to have shot and killed both his wife, Catherine Marie Buttry, 45, and his mother-in-law, Almeda C. Trout, about 11:40 a.m. yesterday.

Both were found dead in the apartment they shared in the 500 block of Orchard Manor Drive in Boonsboro. Ms. Buttry had separated from her husband and was living with Ms. Trout.

Mr. Buttry went to the apartment yesterday morning and neighbors later reported hearing shots, state police said. State police put out an alert for Mr. Buttry and notified Montgomery County police that he had relatives in Gaithersburg and the surrounding area.

Just before 7 p.m., Mr. Buttry was seen driving a blue Ford pickup truck with Virginia license tags on North Summit Avenue in Gaithersburg, Ms. Evans said.

Officers had pursued him for about two blocks when Mr. Buttry's truck struck an unmarked police car in the 100 block of Hutton Street. The truck then struck a curb, blew a tire, and traveled across a lawn on Dogwood Drive, Ms. Evans said.

Police said that as they moved in they heard a shot and found Mr. Buttry unconscious in the vehicle.

He died soon afterward at the hospital.
