In fishing, there often seems to be more than one answer to almost any question. For example, what is the best water temperature in which to catch bluefish?
The answer, of course, is not finite. Rather, according to Mark Sosin and George Poveromo, the answer is best given as a range of temperatures -- from 62 to 70 degrees F.
Poveromo and Sosin are a pair of saltwater sport fishermen and writers who have organized the 1992 National Seminar Series for Salt Water Sportsman magazine. The seminar series comes to the Chesapeake Room at Towson State University on Saturday.
While Poveromo and Sosin, who is host of a nationally syndicated fishing show, are perhaps best known as offshore or gulf fishermen, the program they have helped put together for Saturday will be "80 percent Chesapeake Bay fishing and 20 percent offshore stuff," according to Poveromo.
For the Towson seminar, bay charter captains George Horn, Bob Marshall and Ed Darwin have been enlisted to contribute their expertise on various areas of the Chesapeake.
Horn specializes in the bay north of the Bay Bridge, Darwin in the area from Bloody Point to Love Point, and Marshall is based out of Tilghman Island and covers a range from Bloody Point to below Chesapeake Beach. Among them, they count several decades of experience on the bay.
If offshore fishing is more your style, captain Len Belcaro will offer his advice on the fishing grounds off Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
"It's truly rewarding when a charter boat captain with over two decades of experience tells you he picked up a few tips from the program," said Sosin, who with Poveromo has written a new textbook used in the seminar series.
"Salt Water Sportfishing Techniques," the course book, is a little marvel in itself. It includes a table detailing optimum temperature ranges for virtually all Atlantic Coast game fish, detailed graphics and diagrams and chapters on the use of electronics, reading and understanding tides and rigging baits and lures, as well as boat selection, tactics and knots.
For those in attendance to view clearly knot-tying and bait-rigging demonstrations, the experts' techniques will be shown on 10-foot-square screens by closed-circuit television.
The cost of the seminar is $35, and there were plenty of seats available, Poveromo said late last week. The Chesapeake Room has a capacity of 600.
The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
