Boston Red Sox -- An arbitrator awarded 2B Jody Reed (.283, 5 HRs, 60 RBI) the club's offer of $1.6 million, rather than Reed's request for $2.25 million. He earned $850,000 last season.

Houston Astros -- Agreed to terms with C-2B Craig Biggio (.295, 4 HRs, 46 RBI, 19 SB) on a one-year contract for $1,375,000. Biggio, who made $452,000 last season, had asked for $1.6 million in arbitration; the club had offered $1.05 million.

Oakland Athletics -- Named Reggie Jackson assistant to the president for community affairs.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Agreed to a $4.5 million, one-year contract with P Doug Drabek (15-14, 3.07 ERA). Drabek, who earned $3.35 million last season, was seeking $4.9 million in arbitration; the club had offered $3,685,000. The salary ties him for 12th by average annual value and makes him the fifth-highest paid pitcher.

Texas Rangers -- An arbitrator awarded P Kevin Brown (9-12, 4.40 ERA) his request of $1.2 million, rather than the club's offer of $750,000. Brown made $355,000 last season. An arbitrator awarded P Kenny Rogers (4-4, 7.53) the club's offer of $620,000, rather than his request of $975,000. Rogers made $287,000 last season.

Basketball

Sacramento Kings -- Signed C Steve Scheffler (a CBA All-Star with Quad City) to a 10-day contract.

Colleges

Colgate -- Hired Dick Biddle (Navy defensive coordinator and linebacker coach) as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. Promoted defensive coordinator and secondary coach Kevin Callahan to assistant head coach. Promoted line coach Ed Argast to offensive coordinator.

Hockey

Hartford Whalers -- Arbitrator awarded LW Pat Verbeek (15 goals, 27 assists) a $820,000 salary for this season and 1992-93. The salary is a $320,000 raise. Verbeek had requested $1.2 million; the club had offered $500,000.

Minnesota North Stars -- Retired No. 8 uniform of F Bill Goldsworthy (267 goals, 239 assists in 10 seasons).
