WESTMINSTER — The Leisure Racquetball Club has been sold to its longtime manager and her husband, who say they plan to offer more activities for children.

Kathy Cornell -- manager of the club for 11 years -- and her husband, Joseph Cornell, purchased the business Feb. 1, former owner Charles H. Winterstein said Wednesday.

They waited to announce the sale until all paper work was final, he said.

Winterstein, 53, of Westminster still owns the building, but said he decided to sell the club, which he opened 12 years ago, to have more time for himself.

He would not disclose the sale price.

Currently, the club offers racquetball, wallyball and basketball, said Kathy Cornell, 34.

Racquetball "camps" to teach children ages 8 to 13 the game now are being offered on Saturdays, she said.

The club, at 425 Manchester Road, has

extended weekend hours to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, she said.

Cornell also said she would like to offer aerobics classes in a few months.

Leisure has about 750 members and employs six people, she said.

Her husband, a 31-year-old computer programmer at Telemecanique Inc., and her mother, Eva Yingling, both work part time, and her son, Gary Gross, 16, is an avid racquetball player.

"It's a family oriented thing," Cornell said. "Racquetball is our life."

Theracquetball club is separate from Leisure Health Spa, whose owners filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code lastNovember.

The racquetball club is not involved in the bankruptcy proceedings, which are pending.

Last month, spa owner Michael G. Owings said he is working with Doug Emel, owner of Carroll Fitness Center in Finksburg, on a plan to have Emel manage the spa.
