* Marine Pfc. Matthew J. Friedel, son of Larry J. and Elizabeth N. Friedel of Taneytown, recently completed infantry training.

During the course at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C., students receiveclassroom instruction and participate in field exercises involving infantry tactics, construction and camouflage positions, and the use of mines, demolitions and communications equipment.

A 1991 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School, Friedel joined the Marine Corps in June 1991.

* Marine Pfc. Joseph P. Kreit, son of Joseph P. and Helen V. Kreit of Taneytown, recently completed recruit training and was promoted to his present rank.

During the training cycle at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., recruits are taught the basics of battlefield survival and introduced to typical military daily routine.

All recruits participate in an active physical conditioning program and gain proficiency in a variety of military skills, including first aid, rifle marksmanship and close-order drill. Teamwork and self-discipline are emphasized throughout thecycle.

A 1991 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School, Kreit joined the Marine Corps in October 1991.

* Marine Lance Cpls. Dale A. LaRue and Mark T. Thurston recently deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., for a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean.

They will be part of a 2,100-member unit on five ships of the Navy's Landing Force Sixth Fleet.

They will participate in operations and training exercises designed to challenge the mission-readiness of the unit.

LaRue is the son of RaymondA. and Linda L. LaRue of Mount Airy. His wife, Cathy LaRue, is the daughter of Doris Kolbe of Westminster.

The 1985 South Carroll HighSchool graduate joined the Marine Corps in March 1989.

Thurston is the son of Peggy L. Merson of Woodbine. A 1988 graduate of Glenelg High School, Howard County, he joined the Marine Corps in March 1989.

* Marine Pfc. Matthew J. Friedel, son of Larry J. and Elizabeth of Taneytown, has reported for duty with the Third Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He joined the Corps last June.
