The 39th Atlantic Coast Conference football banquet at the Hyatt Regency last night turned into Baltimore Colts night as Don McCauley was honored as Alumnus of the Year and seven of his former teammates, including John Unitas, cheered him on.
McCauley, who played 11 seasons here for the Colts, was the ACC Player of the Year in 1969 and 1970 at North Carolina. He's now a successful restaurateur on Long Island and is active in charity work. His wife and two daughters were with him last night.
Former Colts Unitas, Tom Matte, Marty Domres, Joe Ehrmann, Toni Linhart, Sam Havrilak and Bruce Laird attended, and Laird, McCauley's roommate here, spoke about Don's "inner spirit of being a winner." Ernie Accorsi, formerly of the Colts and now Cleveland's general manager, sent a telegram calling McCauley "the essence of a Baltimore Colt."
