J/24 World Championship Regatta Coming To Town

International Sailingcompetition Planned In Annapolis

Annapolis J/24 Fleet 8 will play host to the 1992 J/24 World Championship Regatta, set for Oct. 29 through Nov. 6 at the Severn Sailing Association and Eastport Yacht Club in Eastport.

A total of 65 teams of top-ranked sailors from across the nation and around the world, including several from the Chesapeake Bay, will compete for the title. All of the competitors at the Worlds have won national or regional qualifying events to earn an invitation to race.

In addition to 22 U.S. districts containing more than 140 individual fleets, the J/24 class also is represented in Argentina, Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Monaco, Peru, Sweden, Switzerland, theUnited Kingdom and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In the U.S. alone, more than 2,000 J/24s are in active competition, and more than 5,000 ofthe boats have been produced since the design first was introduced in 1977. The 24-foot sloop was named "Boat of the Decade" for the 1970s and 1980s by both Sail and Yachting magazines.

In support of this important regatta, Fleet 8 is seeking local and regional sponsors to provide money or donations of such things as hospitality services, printing, office supplies and equipment, computers, fax machines, telephones, long-distance phone service, airline tickets for the international jurors, photo IDs for staff and competitors, trophies for the top five skippers and crews, door prizes, mementos and a crane for weighing the boats prior to racing.

Sponsors will be ensured of highvisibility during the event, which will be attended by more than 600people, including the racers and their friends and families, dozens of local volunteer organizers, foreign ambassadors and national and international media representatives.

The regatta, recognized as a significant international test of skill among some of the world's finest sailors, will receive wide coverage in the national and international sailing press, as well as from regional television and newspapers.
