After beating Peanut Harper, 6-2, 6-2, yesterday in the first round of the Virginia Slims of Chicago Tournament, Pam Shriver said she still has some tennis life left in her 29-year-old body.
"I served well. I volleyed well. I didn't make too many mistakes," Shriver said. "It comes down to putting a lot of pressure on Peanut to have to come up with a lot of good serves and good passes," Shriver said.
So she's not ready to retire -- yet. "I've thought about it a few times," she said.
Rated No. 37 in the world, Shriver, of Lutherville, is seeded eighth. She will meet Australia's Nicole Provis today.
Top seed Steffi Graf downed Japan's Rika Hiraki, 6-0, 6-0.
* David Wheaton found his pace early in the second set to overpower Sandon Stolle and move to the third round of the Federal Express International tournament in Memphis, Tenn.
