Pipe Bomb Detonated In Woods Near Pavilion

A police officer who heard a loud explosion early Sunday near Merriweather Post Pavilion searched the area and found that someone detonated a pipe bomb in a wooded area, county police said.

The officer found the remains of the device shortly before 1 a.m. in woods near one of the Columbia pavilion's parking lots, police said. No one was injured in the incident and no property was damaged.

Police said they have no suspects.

A similar pipe bomb was detonated last Thursday in a mailbox on Mohawk Court. The explosion destroyed the box.

It is unknown whether the two incidents are related, police said.


A Baltimore woman was seriously injured Sunday when her car veered off the road and struck a utility pole in Jessup, county police said.

Marlene Lumpkins, 46, of the 3200 block of Hammonds Ferry Road, was driving north on U.S. 1 just south of Route 175 when her car drove off the right side of the road and struck the pole, police said.

The accident occurred shortly before 5:20 p.m. Lumpkins was transported by ambulance to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was listed in satisfactoryand stable condition Friday.

Police said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Crimes reported to Howard County police:


5500 block of Sterrett Place: A 1985 Toyota Corolla automobile was reported stolen at 8:30 p.m. Monday from a business parking lot.

11000 block Swansfield Road: Jewelry was stolen from a safe that was forced open. The thief broke into the home sometime before 12:30 a.m. Saturday by removing a screen from a basement window.

5600 block Foxcroft Way: Someone kicked in the door to a house at 3 a.m. Thursday, but nothing appeared to have been taken from the home.


10000 block U.S. 1: A 1990 Toyota 4-Runner truckwas reported stolen at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday from the Caton Auto Body Inc. shop.


8800 block U.S. 1: A Ford diesel truck was stolen sometime overnight Monday from a commercial parking lot after the keys were left in the ignition.


6700 block Hunter Road: A refrigerator was reported stolen at 5:40 a.m. Monday from a houseunder construction. A witness saw two men back a truck up to the door of the home and load the appliance.

7700 block U.S. 1: A videocassette recorder that didn't work was stolen at 3:30 p.m. Friday from a home. The thief bypassed a working recorder.

7100 block Brookdale Drive: A 1987 Chevrolet Camaro automobile was reported stolen at 8 p.m. Friday from a residential area. An Isuzu Trooper vehicle that had previously been reported stolen was recovered in the same area.

6800 block Meadowridge Road: Several boxes of cigarettes were reported stolen at 5 a.m. Friday from the Stewart Petroleum gas station. Thethief broke a window and grabbed the cigarettes.

10300 block Wetherburn Way: Several construction tools were taken sometime before 8:30 a.m. Friday from a home under construction.

3200 block Normandy Woods Drive: A videocassette recorder, a camera and jewelry were reported stolen at 1:30 p.m. Sunday from a home that showed no signs of forced entry.
