Gillece to be honored today for 15 years of civic service

David M. Gillece, former president of Center City-Inner Harbor Development Inc. and the Baltimore Economic Development Corp., was to receive the Lucien E.D. Gaudreau Award for Professional Excellence today during a luncheon ceremony at the Engineering Society, 11 W. Mount Vernon Place.

The award, named for the founder of Gaudreau Inc., a Baltimore-based architectural and engineering company, recognizes people who have made important contributions to Baltimore for 15 years or more.

Past recipients include former housing commissioner M. Jay Brodie and Curtis Lantz, former head of Baltimore's school construction program.

William Gaudreau Sr., president of the company, said the award is being given in recognition of Mr. Gillece's "15 years of distinguished and dedicated service to the economic development of Baltimore and its built environment." A $250 donation will be made to the Neighborhood Design Center in Mr. Gillece's name, Mr. Gaudreau said.

Mr. Gillece was president of Center City-Inner Harbor Development in 1990 and most of 1991. He was also president of the Baltimore Economic Development Corp. from 1988 to 1991.

He was deputy director of the Greater Baltimore Committee from 1976 to 1988 and deputy director of the Citizens' Planning and Housing Association from 1973 to 1976.

He left the Schmoke administration last fall to become a private consultant.

At the same time, the two agencies he headed were combined to become the City of Baltimore Development Corp., now headed by Honora Freeman.

Edward Paul Haladay has joined the Columbia Design Collective, a Columbia-based architecture, planning, landscape architecture and interior design firm, as a principal. A former principal of RTKL Associates, Mr. Haladay has three decades of experience in management and design team leadership on a variety of hospitality, retail, office and institutional projects.

Company officials say his arrival is a key step in the firm's effort to transform itself from a local multidisciplinary company to one that serves a wider market. Projects scheduled for this year include a 1,200-acre resort development in central Florida and a condominium community in the Caribbean.

Two architects formerly associated with the collective, Scott A. Grice and Walter Branche III, have left that firm to open Scott Grice Architects Inc. in Columbia.

The partners have more than 30 years of design management and production experience, including work on office buildings, shopping centers, mixed-use complexes and medical facilities.

Student designs for the area of Baltimore between Mount Vernon and Bolton Hill will be on display inside the former city firehouse at 831 N. Calvert St., starting with a reception tomorrow at 5 p.m. The projects were completed by students from the University of Maryland's School of Architecture under the direction of Professor Matthew J. Bell and visiting critic Steven Peterson of Peterson Littenberg Architects in New York. They will be on display until March 6 and may be seen after tomorrow by appointment. Call 539-7516.

* LaSalle Partners recently named McShea & Co. Inc. to be its exclusive leasing agent for the Montgomery Executive Center at 6 Montgomery Village Ave. in Gaithersburg. The 160,000-square-foot building is owned by T. Rowe Price Associates of Baltimore. LaSalle has assumed asset management duties on behalf of T. Rowe Price for all of Price's properties nationwide.

* The Maryland/Washington, D.C., chapter of the Certified Commercial Investment Members is sponsoring a daylong educational session entitled "Capitalizing on an Upside Down Real Estate Market." * The Dallas office of RTKL Associates Inc. has been chosen to provide design, urban planning and engineering services for the $100 million first phase of Urbano Alameda, part of an 11-block revitalization area of an historic district in Mexico City that was damaged by a 1985 earthquake.

* The architectural firm David H. Gleason and Associates has been hired to design a brick and wrought-iron fence and landscaping to screen a 150-space parking lot that developer Ron Russo is planning on land bounded by South Charles, West Montgomery, West Churchill and South Hanover streets in South Baltimore. Mr. Russo has a contract to buy the parcel and is negotiating with Colonial Parking Inc. to operate the parking lot.
