9-year-old boy undergoes surgery following shooing

February 03, 1992

A 9-year-old boy was in critical condition last night at Johns Hopkins Hospital after being shot in the chest at his family's East Baltimore rowhouse, police said.

Investigators said the boy, whom they did not identify, and his 18-year-old brother were in the bathroom of the house in the 1600 block of Ashland Avenue when the gun discharged shortly before 8:30 p.m.

The mother was home at the time and called police to the scene but was unable to explain what happened, the authorities said.

Police said they were still trying to determine who was responsible for firing the gun. The boy was undergoing surgery late last night, and police were interviewing the 18-year-old.
