Florida, Morehead lead college event

The University of Florida and Morehead State University lead the men's and women's divisions, respectively, in the 12th annual Ebonite/Fair Lanes Collegiate Bowling Championships after six games of qualifying. The tournament is taking place at Fair Lanes King's Point in Randallstown.

The Florida men shot a total of 6,402, an average of 1,067. Ed Cox led the way with a 300 game, and his three-game 796 series is a tournament record. Defending champion Penn State is seventh with 6,068. Melinda Johnson paced the Morehead women, the defending champion, with a 1,259 six-game total. Julie Thomas of North Carolina State University set a women's high game with 290.

The tournament continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. with three regulation games and five Baker games. The field will then be cut to the final four men and women for head-to-head matches. A total of $5,000 in scholarships will be awarded with $1,200 going to the first place teams.
