A man dressed as a woman was shot and robbed of his purse Tuesday night as he walked through a Brooklyn Park alley.

Angel Lopez, 42, of the 800 block of Edmondson Avenue in Baltimore, was in fair and stable condition yesterday at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center at University Hospital in Baltimore.

When police arrived at the 5100 block of Wasena Avenue, Lopez told police he was a woman and his name was "Angie," said police spokesman V. Richard Molloy.

He told investigators he was walking in the alley, when one or more assailants hit him in the mouth. When he fellto the ground, he felt someone going through the pockets of his coat.

Lopez, who was missing several teeth, was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

He told doctors there he had been punched in the mouth. An X-ray of his mouth revealed bullet fragments, Molloy said.

"We did not know she was a he until we got to the hospital and the doctors told us," Molloy said.

Neither did Carol Metzger, of the 5100 block of Wasena Avenue, who saw Lopez near her home as she arrived from work.

"She, at least I thought it was she, was bleeding a lot," Metzger said. "I didn't know it was a man until the police called me this morning and told me."

Metzger said Lopez was wearing corduroy pants, a "frilly blouse" and a leather coat.

"She was covered with blood," Metzger said. "She hollered to me that she needed help."

Metzger brought Lopez into her home and called police.

"When someone needs help, you help them," she said. "I hope someone would dothe same for me or my children."

Metzger said the incident was unusual for her neighborhood. Molloy agreed.

"We have no idea what he was doing there," Molloy said.

County homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
