Glenelg runs off with boys, girls titles Hogan wins 2 titles, anchors top relay

Glenelg swept the boys and girls team titles at the Howard County Indoor Track Championships yesterday at the 5th Regiment Armory.

Glenelg's Gerard Hogan won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs and anchored the winning 3,200-meter relay to lead the boys team past runner-up Howard and third-place Atholton.

"This is my senior year so I really wanted to win the county title," Hogan said.

He trailed his brother, Ed, by as many as 30 yards during the 3,200 run, but put on a kick in the final four laps. He took the lead with two laps to go.

"I just wasn't feeling great for the 3,200," Hogan said.

For the Glenelg girls, Alicia Adams won the 3,200-meter run, Kelly Pellovitz the 800 and Kerry Rutter the shot put. The Gladiators also won the 3,200-meter relay in which they set a meet record of 8 minutes, 36.9 seconds.

Glenelg's girls won despite an amazing performance by Hammond's Kisha Jett, who won three individual gold medals for the runner-up Bears.

Hammond's sophomore won the 55-meter --, 55-meter hurdles and 300-meter run and was part of the winning 800-meter relay team.

"I'm tired," Jett said after her final event, the 800-meter relay. "But usually you leave a meet feeling something was missing -- that you could have done better. Today nothing was missing."

Her teammate, senior Jackie Rieschick, worked even harder -- winning the 1,600, 500 and finishing second in the 800. Rieschick also ran on the winning 800-meter relay team.

"The mile was the hardest race for me," Rieschick said. "[Kelly] Pellovitz really pushed me."

Rieschick won that race by just seven-tenths of a second. Pellovitz beat Rieschick in the 500.

An outstanding boys performance was turned in by Atholton's Tony Dedmond, who won the 300 and 500, led off the second-place 3,200 relay and finished fourth in the high jump, as the Raiders ended up third in the boys' standings.

In both the 300 and 500, Dedmond beat Howard's James Morrow, who held the lead in the final lap of the 500 but made a strategical error. Morrow drifted out to the third lane, allowing Dedmond room to race by on the inside lanes.

"He [Morrow] had it won," Dedmond said. "He was trying to block me to the outside but came over too far."
