The women's basketball team at College Park has been voted the best in the land. This is a first for the program. The team is also breaking new ground in attendance. When it defended its No. 1 ranking for the first time (successfully, against Clemson), it drew 1,389 fans -- topping 1,000 at home for the third straight time. Yet 1,000 is a far cry from the 13,000-plus the losing men's team regularly draws. The trick for the women is to gain that kind of respect without re-creating the conditions that have made men's basketball a disgrace at so many campuses over the years.
