Hearing Scheduled On Proposed Jail

January 23, 1992

A public hearing on County Executive Robert R. Neall's proposal to build a 650-bed jail in Glen Burnie is set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at theArundel Center in Annapolis.

The County Council originally scheduled the hearing for Jan. 29, but changed the date Tuesday night at the request of Councilman George Bachman, D-Linthicum, who said he could not be present on the 29th. The new detention center would be in Bachman's district.

The council will hear citizens' opinions on a resolution, requested by Neall, approving the detention center site at the 84-acre old Army Depot property on New Ordnance Road. The resolution also supportsNeall's request for $1.25 million in design money from the General Assembly, and matching that amount with county money.

North County political leaders have expressed reservations about the proposed jailsince Neall announced his plan last week. Environmental hazards and the problems associated with transporting inmates 40 miles between Glen Burnie and the Circuit Court in Annapolis head their list of concerns.
