Driver dies in harbor tunnel crush

January 23, 1992

A man was killed today when his vehicle was crushed between a tractor-trailer and a dump truck in the southbound tube of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel.

State Toll Facilities spokesman Thomas Freeburger said the man's identity was not being released pending notification of his relatives.

Mr. Freeburger said the victim was driving a Ford Bronco that stopped behind a tractor-trailer after another car broke down.

While the vehicles were stopped, a dump truck crashed into the Bronco.

The victim was crushed against the back end of the tractor-trailer and died at the scene, Mr. Freeburger said.

No one else was injured in the collision, he said.

Charges are pending against the operator of the dump truck, who was not identified. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, Mr. Freeburger said.

The southbound lane of Interstate 895 was closed from 8:25 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. Northbound traffic wasn't affected, and southbound traffic was re-routed onto Interstate 95 and over the Key Bridge on Interstate 695, Mr. Freeburger said.
