Cincinnati Reds -- Agreed to terms with OF Dave Martinez and P Trevor Hoffman on one-year contracts.

Colorado Rockies -- Signed P Jose Rolando Matos, P Olmedo Mendez, 2B Carlos Christopher, C Wandel Garcia and OF Pedro Hernandez. Named Julian Gonzalez scout for the Dominican Republic.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Named Mike Caldwell pitching coach at rookie league Helena and Ben Oglivie batting coach of rookie league Chandler.

New York Yankees -- Agreed to terms with C Mike Stanley on a contract with Class AAA Columbus.

San Diego Padres -- Signed IF Jose Valentin and OF Will Taylor to one-year contracts.

NBA -- Fined New York Knicks coach Pat Riley $2,500 for making critical remarks about officiating to the media after the Knicks' loss to Cleveland in Richfield, Ohio, on Saturday night.

Houston Rockets -- Signed G Avery Johnson to a second 10-day contract.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Placed G Mitchell Wiggins on the injured list (swollen right knee) and activated C David Hoppen.

San Antonio Spurs -- Fired coach Larry Brown (153-131 in 3 1/2 seasons). Named VP of basketball operations Bob Bass coach.

Colleges

Eastern New Mexico -- Announced the resignation of football coach Don Carthel. Named Howard Stearns acting football coach through March 1.

Iowa State -- Announced the resignation of wrestling coach Jim Gibbons effective at the end of the season.

Michigan -- Announced WR/KR Desmond Howard will forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft.

Northwestern -- Announced that sophomore G Pat Baldwin will miss the remainder of the basketball season because of a blood clot in his right shoulder.

Ohio State -- Backup QB Joe Pickens announced he will transfer to Duke.

Oregon State -- Announced that its basketball game scheduled for Saturday night against Washington State will be postponed so that its players can attend the funeral of former player Earnest Killum in Los Angeles.

San Jose State -- Named Ron Turner, offensive coordinator at Stanford for the past three seasons, head football coach.

Football

NFL -- Announced that Seattle Seahawks FB John L. Williams and DT Cortez Kennedy will replace Kansas City Chiefs RB Christian Okoye and Houston Oilers DT Ray Childress on the AFC roster in the Pro Bowl.

L Denver Broncos -- Fired offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Named Bill Cowher coach.

Hockey

Boston Bruins -- Agreed on a contract extension with G Andy Moog through the 1993-94 season.

Minnesota North Stars -- Traded D Brian Glynn to the Edmonton Oilers for D David Shaw.
