It's time to renew some old rivalries as intra-county play begins tonight in high school hoops.
The most appealing matchup might be onthe girls side, where Liberty (6-5 overall, 1-1 in the Central Maryland Conference) plays host to North Carroll (7-5, 1-2).
Much is at stake -- including an early advantage in the county race and getting back in the CMC chase. Both clubs will be trying to rebound from weekend losses.
Both teams have had puzzling, up-and-down seasons so far -- looking like possible top 20 metro teams one night and mediocre squads the next.
North Carroll knocked off a solidGlenelg (Howard County) team, then-ranked seventh in The Baltimore Sun's metro area poll, 50-45, earlier in the season, only to get routed, 68-18, a week later by top-ranked Mount Hebron.
Liberty opened its CMC slate with a thrilling one-point win over Frederick earlier this month before dropping a lackluster 41-37 decision to unheralded Thomas Johnson Friday.
* The county boys race is up in the air, too. It should clear up a bit after Westminster travels to South Carrolland North Carroll entertains Liberty tonight.
South Carroll (5-6,0-3 in the CMC) appeared to be the team to beat early on, but has struggled of late. The Cavaliers dropped under the .500 mark after Friday's 85-46 loss at Frederick.
Westminster (5-6, 1-1) is coming offa 66-55 upset win at Linganore of Frederick County Friday.
Look for plenty of points in that Liberty-North Carroll contest.
Liberty's Mike Davidson is the county's leading scorer, with an average of more than 19 points a game, and teammate Matt Alexander is averaging more than 13.4 points a game.
North Carroll counters with a trio ofplayers averaging in double figures -- Eric Nowicki (14 per game), Wade Zufall (12) and Dave Polischeck (12).
* The Francis Scott Key wrestling team (6-0-1 overall) will try to keep its perfect 4-0 Monocacy Valley Athletic League record intact tomorrow night when it playshost to North Hagerstown of Washington County. Ten Eagles recorded pins Saturday afternoon in a 77-0 victory over Walkersville of Frederick County.
* The Western Maryland College wrestling team will compete in York (Pa.) College's Spartan Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The eight-team field also includes Gettysburg, Albright, Gallaudet, Johns Hopkins, Messiah, Muhlenberg and host York.
WMC (3-4) split a tri-meet Saturday at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, defeating Washington & Lee, 27-12, and losing to Hopkins, 26-15.
Earlier in the season, the Green Terrors blanked Gallaudet, 57-0, and defeated Messiah, 28-17.
* The Bear Run Four-Miler, a road race sponsored by the Westminster Road Runners, starts at noon Sunday.
The race will begin and end at the corner of Hughes Shop and Pleasant Valley Roads, on the east side of Pleasant Valley. Registration begin at 11:15 a.m.
