10-mile team event set for Howard CC

January 21, 1992|By Michael Reeb

Most road races, unlike cross country events, are geared to individual competition.

There are exceptions, of course: In the Brighton Dam Challenge, the Howard County Striders and Montgomery County Road Runners fight for territorial bragging rights, and the Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club issues an all-comers team challenge each year in the John F. Kennedy 50-Miler.

But come Feb. 23, the team is the thing when the District of Columbia-Maryland chapter of the Road Runners Club of America holds its annual Ten-Mile Team Challenge at Howard Community College.

"We'll probably have between eight and 10 different clubs," John Wheatland, the coordinator of the race and a member of the Howard County Striders, said last week. "The clubs that have traditionally participated are the Baltimore Road Runners, the Howard County Striders, the Annapolis Striders, the Montgomery Road Runners Club, RASAC, the Frederick Steeplechasers, the D.C. Road Runners, the Queen City Striders and the Prince George's Running Club."

Baltimore will be defending its overall title, as well as its men's and women's championships, but Wheatland expects the competition to be stiff. RASAC has scheduled a club-wide 10-mile tuneup two weeks prior to the team championship.

To qualify for the overall title, all members of the team must be RRCA members, and the team must have 12 male and three female finishers. However, a team may compete in only the male or female division.

The race will begin and finish on the campus of Howard Community College. Entry fee is $5 for RRCA members, and registration begins at 6:30 the morning of the race.
