Carmichael's 3-pointers help Coppin to 85-73 win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Keith Carmichael kept making the three-pointers last night, except this time the game wasn't on the line.

The Coppin State freshman connected on eight three-pointers in a game-high 30-point effort as the Eagles rolled to an 85-73 victory over Bethune-Cookman before an Ocean Center crowd of 1,300.

Carmichael, who hit the game-winner in Saturday's 80-79 victory TTC at Florida A&M, was seemingly unstoppable, and so were the rest of the Eagles. This was Coppin's fourth straight victory and it kept the Eagles tied for first in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

"I'm well aware of his three-point capability," said Eagles coach Fang Mitchell about Carmichael. "For a freshman, he's playing quite well."

Carmichael, who made eight of 17 from three-point range, passed Tariq Saunders as the team's leading long-rang shooter with 25. Saunders, in perhaps the only off note of the night, was 0-8 from long distance.

The only real question was if Coppin State would suffer a letdown after Saturday's victory. Bethune-Cookman (1-13) lost by 24 points to Morgan State Saturday and was without its second-leading scorer, freshmen Donohue Smith.

The Eagles never trailed, opening up a 17-6 advantage four minutes into the contest. Bethune-Cookman didn't make a field goal for seven minutes as the Eagles' pressure defense forced numerous Wildcat turnovers.

"I preached to them about playing aggressive," Mitchell said. "Our press really hurt them."

Coppin State led 45-30 at halftime and by as many as 19 in the second half.

Senior Darren Woods scored 14 points for the Eagles, now 10-5

overall and 4-1 in conference play.
