The Naval Academy's ice hockey club team posted two impressive victories over the College Militaire Royal (CMR) of St. Jean, Quebec this weekend at Dahlgren Hall, enhancing its chances of making the national tournament for the second straight year.

Coach Jim Barry's Midshipmen completed a two-game sweep of the Division II Canadians with a 9-4 triumph Sunday. CMR (17-5) defeated Navy (10-2) twice last year by scores of 10-2 and 9-4, but the Mids stunned them Saturday, 6-4, and put them away in the final period Sunday.

CMR took a 1-0 lead Sunday, only to have Navy answer with three goals. By the end of the second period, it was 4-4.

But Navy scoredthe first goal of the last period and, according to Barry, "blew them out after that."

Eric Fontaine netted a pair of goals, and Jake Skala, Jeff Fogarty, Tim Fetsch, Rob Doherty, Rob Masson, Steve Roberto and Steve Godinho had one each. Skala and Fogarty each had three assists.

The Mids outshot CMR, 45-34, before a crowd of over 1,500.

In Saturday's victory, the Mids led from start to finish. Navy enjoyed a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period, and 4-2 after two.

Navy received two goals each from Fogarty and Doherty, while Bobby Braun and Fontaine scored the others. Braun and Skala each had three assists.

Richie Doyle played his usual outstanding game in goal for Navy.

Invitations for the National Club Ice Hockey Tournament, planned for late February at Penn State University, are expected to goout next week.

"We have to be ranked in the top eight to qualify," said Barry, whose Mids were ranked No. 10 by the American Collegiate Hockey Association before the big weekend against CMR.

Navy's next game is 6:30 p.m. Saturday vs. North Carolina's club team in Chapel Hill.
