Chicago Cubs -- Signed P Les Lancaster (9-7, 3.52 ERA) to a 1-year contract for $1.1 million. Announced that SS Shawon Dunston had been admitted to Northwestern (Ill.) Memorial Hospital for evaluation of a back injury.

San Francisco Giants -- Signed free-agent OF Chris James (.238, 5, 41) to a 1-year contract. Designated P Paul McClellan for assignment.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Signed P Al Leiter (3 games) to a 1-year contract for $175,000. Signed OF Ryan Thompson to a 1-year contract.

Rochester Red Wings (Class AAA) -- Named Bruce Leichtman assistant GM; Russ Brandon director of baseball operations, and Bob Socci director of communications.

Basketball

Boston Celtics -- Placed F Kevin McHale (torn right calf muscle) ++ on the injured list.

Seattle SuperSonics -- Fired coach K. C. Jones (59-59 over 2 seasons) and assistant Kip Motta (Martin Spalding). Named Bob Kloppenburg interim coach.

Colleges

College Football Association -- Announced the admission of Fresno State as an active member.

Arizona -- Named Kent Baer defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.

Mount St. Mary's -- Named assistant lacrosse coach Dan Whelan head coach and assistant baseball coach Bob Hampton (former Washington Senators minor-leaguer) interim baseball coach.

Southern -- Recommended that AD Marino H. Casem be named temporary football coach. Officials had been prepared to name Houston Markham, Alabama State University's coach, to the position, but found out Tuesday that he renewed his contract with the Hornets.

Football

NFL -- Named Pittsburgh Steelers LB Greg Lloyd and Detroit Lions LB Chris Spielman to the Pro Bowl as 43rd or "need" players. Invited Maryland CB Scott Rosen, DT Larry Webster and PK Dan DeArmas to the scouting combine next month in Indianapolis. Wide receiver Gene Thomas is also expected to receive an invitation.

Cleveland Browns -- Named Al Groh defensive assistant.

New York Giants -- Named Rod Rust defensive coordinator. Promoted Jim Fassel, quarterbacks coach, to offensive

coordinator.

Hockey

Washington Capitals -- Loaned G Byron Dafoe (8-5, 3.19 goals-against average with AHL Baltimore) and C Harry Mews (recovering from broken jaw) to independent New Haven (AHL) for the remainder of the season. Reached an agreement with RW Andrei Kovalev and assigned him to New Haven.
