Dayton Man Charged With Robbery Attempt

A Dayton man was arrested Saturday and charged with attempting to rob a motorist, who was choked with a garden hose after giving the suspect a ride in his car, county police said.

Kenneth Lee Hammond, 31, of the 5000 block of Greenbridge Road was charged with attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and battery after the 12:45 a.m. incident,police said.

The victim, a 23-year-old Dayton man, reported that he picked up Hammond and another man at about 12:15 a.m. after one of them flaggeddown his car in the area of Ten Oaks Road near Greenbridge Road in Dayton.

Police said the motorist agreed to give the two men a ride to Harper's Farm Road. After about 20 minutes, one of the passengers asked the driver to pull over in a nearby parking lot, police said.

When the man parked the car, Hammond's companion, in the back seat,began choking the driver with a garden hose and demanded his money, police said. A passing motorist witnessed trouble in the parking lot and pulled over, at which point the two attackers fled.

A patrol officer spotted Hammond walking in the area of Folly Quarter Road at about 2:15 a.m. and stopped him for questioning, police said. The victim later identified Hammond as one of the attackers.

Police said they are still looking for the other man. Hammond remained at the Howard County Detention Center yesterday on $25,000 bond.

MAN ROBBED OF $83 IN KINGS CONTRIVANCE

An armed robber took $83 from a Columbia man Friday night at the Kings Contrivance Village Center after asking the man for a cigarette, county police said.

The victim told police he was walking to his car in the parking lot at about 5:30 p.m. when a man stopped him and asked for a cigarette. When he began to look for one, the stranger pulled out a handgun, police said.

Police said the man pushed the barrel of the gun against the man's chest and took his money.

The man walked away, and the victim was not injured, police said.

COLUMBIAN ABDUCTED BY MAN HIDING IN CAR

A 28-year-old Columbia man was abducted from the Long Reach Village Center Monday morning after returning to his car and discovering a man hiding in the back seat. The man pointed a dark-colored object at the victim and told him to drive him to Pittsburgh.

When the car stopped at a traffic light in Breezewood, Pa., the suspect fled. The victim then went to a nearby pizza shop and reported the abduction to the Pennsylvania State Police. The driver was not injured.

The suspect is described as a white male, 25 to 30 years old, about 5 feet, 9 inches, very thin, with light brown hair. He was wearing a Boston Red Sox baseball cap, a faded jean jacket and blue jeans.

FIRE CAUSED BY FLUE FORCES 2 FROM HOME

Two adults were forced from their Clarksville house Monday afternoon by a fire caused by a malfunctioning flue in a wood-burning stove.

The fire began 2:40 p.m. at the home of Joan and Bruce McNeil of the 7300 block of Mink Hollow. Firefighters from Howardand Montgomery counties responded and put out the blaze in 15 minutes. The fire, which burned from the basement through the walls and to the attic, caused an estimated $25,000 damage to the basement, first floor and roof area of the home.

One firefighter received first-degree burns and was treated at the scene.

1000 block of Wayover Way: Someone was seen fleeing from a garage as the occupants arrived home at 7:50 p.m. Saturday. Nothing was taken. The suspect is described as wearing a blue jacket with red trim, blue jeans and sneakers.

11200 block of Powder Run: Resident heard the front screen door open and observed the door handle move at 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday.

9100 blockof Red Branch Road: Boxes of candy bars, luncheon meat, cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash were reported stolen from Hilmer's Deli at 7:15 a.m. Friday. Entry was made by breaking a glass door.

10700 block of Charter Drive: A suspect described as a 6-foot-tall white male was reported masturbating outside an office window at 8:40 p.m. Thursday.

Cooksville

1400 block of Bushy Park Road: Someoneentered a house Friday afternoon and choked the victim while asleep.After a struggle, the victim broke free, and the suspect fled in a cream-colored Monte Carlo. The suspect is described as a 6-foot, 200-pound white male, wearing a white T-shirt and a blue-and-red shirt.

Elkridge

6700 block of Dorsey Road: A gray Fruehaue trailer was reported stolen at 11 p.m. Thursday.

Ellicott City

1100 block ofFarside Road: Jewelry and a videocassette recorder were reported stolen from a house at 1:30 Sunday. p.m.

Laurel

9500 block of U.S.1: A gray Audi 5000 was reported stolen at 8:15 a.m. Thursday while awaiting repairs.

Savage

200 block of Savage Guilford Road: An undisclosed amount of cash, wallets and two pairs of overalls were reported stolen 7 a.m. Sunday from a home entered through an unlocked rear kitchen window.
