UMBC swimmers sweep Brooklyn

The University of Maryland Baltimore County continued its winning ways in swimming yesterday, sweeping Brooklyn College in East Coast Conference action at the UMBC Fieldhouse.

The men, who had won for the first time in eight meets when they defeated Rider College last week, placed first in every event in winning, 133-45, and the women, who had ended an 0-6 string by beating Rider and Drexel University last week, also took every event in winning, 118-58.

Tim Bosse (Loyola), Loren Siebert (Atholton), and William Lamb (Dulaney) each won two events for the Retriever men, and Jennifer Atkins (Oakland Mills), Krista Hamilton, Jennifer Fosnaugh, Steph Schaeffer, and Peg Skryja (Manchester) each earned two first places for the women.

* Donna Novotny set a Towson State record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 10 minutes, 41.49 seconds and won the 500-freestyle in 4:14.73, but the women lost a home meet to ECC rival Rider, 124-116. The men also lost to the Broncs, 120-112, as each meet went to the final relay.

For the Towson State men (2-2), Brent Morehart and Chris Constantine each won two events.

* The University of Maryland used strength and depth to win 12 of 16 events and defeat Navy, 168-131, the sixth straight time the Terps have won the intra-state women's competition since it began in 1979. Plebe Julie Zavodny was a double winner for Navy with firsts in the 200-meter freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Wrestling

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Mike Flemming collected the only Western Maryland points in three meets against Division I opposition in the Pennsylvania Duals program at Franklin & Marshall College. Fleming drew with F&M's Aaron Svitana, 5-5, in a 150-pound matchup. Western Maryland lost to the Diplomats, 43-2, to runner-up Rutgers University, 50-0, and to champion Pennsylvania, 52-0.
