Celebrate Lee's birthday at his birthplace

Jan. 19 marks the 185th birthday of General Robert E. Lee. To celebrate, Stratford Hall Plantation, Lee's birthplace in Stratford, will hold an open house that day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the public will be admitted free.

Lee was born Jan. 19, 1807, in the Mother's Room of Stratford's Great House. His crib remains on view as part of the original furnishings.

Tours will be conducted throughout the day, and complimentary light refreshments will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Log Cabin dining room on the property will offer a luncheon menu from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The plantation is just off Virginia Route 214, 20 miles east of Virginia Route 3 and U.S. Route 301. For information, call (804) 493-8038.
