3403 Greenmount Ave. Hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays; 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays; noon to 10 p.m. Sundays. Call (410) 243-0040. A-1 Pizza in Waverly is one of a three-store chain locally owned and operated by John Laou and Spyros Mamalis.

Strictly a carryout and delivery establishment, the shop specializes in freshly made pasta, fresh-dough pizza and a variety of other take-out foods.

Pizzas range from $6.25 to $14.25 depending on size and choice of 11 toppings. Pasta dishes include spaghetti with a tasty marinara sauce ($4.95), a three-cheese and meat lasagna ($6) and manicotti, also a three-cheese blend rolled in noodles ($5.50). All pasta dishes are served with garlic bread.

Stromboli (baked inside/outside pizza, $6.25 to $7.95) is also a popular item, as are the Greek items on the menu. Gyros served on pita bread are $4.50 each and gyro platters, which include french fries and cole slaw, go for $5.95. Good homemade crab cakes, nicely seasoned shrimp, crisp chicken and flaky lake trout "in a basket" (with fries and cole slaw) vary in price from $4.95 to $6.95.

A-1 also offers an assortment of sandwiches (from $1.50 to $2.25) and subs (from $3.85 to $6.85), along with side order selection and salads.

Apple pie, cheese cake and A-1's special chocolate cream pie are featured for dessert, but sweet potato pie ($1.29 a slice) seems to be the crowd favorite.

Delivery is prompt and the servers are pleasant and courteous.
