Jessup inmate stabbed to death

January 10, 1992

An inmate at the Maryland House of Correction in Jessup was stabbed to death last night, apparently by another prisoner.

Maurice Grace, of Baltimore, was stabbed several times in the back and chest at the conclusion of a nighttime recreation period, said Sgt. Gregory M. Shipley, a prison spokesman.

Grace, who was 36, was pronounced dead about 10:10 p.m. at Kimbrough Army Hospital at Fort Meade, Shipley said.

About 200 inmates were in the prison gym for recreation, which ended about 9 p.m. Shipley said investigators have found no motive for the attack.

After the stabbing, officials ordered all inmates to remain in their housing units. By this morning, the murder weapon had not been found.

Grace began serving a 20-year sentence in December 1988 for (( conspiracy to smuggle cocaine, Shipley said.
