Panther Girls Roll

The North Carroll girls basketball team jumped out to a 14-5 lead and didn't look back as they defeated Centennial (Howard County), 62-47, to win the North Carroll holiday Tournament, Dec. 28.

Kim Piccione and Jennie Cooper led the way offensively for the Panthers, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.

North Carroll reached the finals with a 73-35 win over Franklin, Dec. 27.

Michelle Jeffery led three panthers in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Francine Hewes and Mindy Bankert both added 10.

In the Liberty Belle tournament in Eldersburg, host Liberty fell to Howard, 53-36, in the championship game.

Howard put the gameout of reach in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. With a 37-27 lead after three, Howard went on a 12-0 run to open the final frame, paced by Sharon Ford's 10 points.

Ford finished with 18 pointson the night, while Kelly Foreman registered 15 points for the Lions.

The Lions reached the tournament finals with a 65-33 romp over City on Dec. 27.

Foreman scored 26 points in the win with Amy Wolffadding 17.

The Francis Scott Key girls had a rough time at the Central Maryland Holiday tournament at Atholton High School in Howard County.

After dropping a 69-57 decision to the host team in the opening round Dec. 27, the Eagles let a slim halftime lead slip away as they fell to Quince Orchard (Montgomery County), 55-37, in the consolation game Dec. 28.

Leading 26-24 against Quince Orchard at half, the Eagles were outscored 31-11 in the final two quarters.

Monica Smith led the Eagles' balanced attack with eight points. Shelley Smith, Cathi Bower and Erin Murphey eached scored seven points in the losing effort.
