NHRA -- Suspended Darrell Alderman (2-time and defending NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series pro stock champion) indefinitely after he pleaded guilty Dec. 27 to federal charges of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine. Alderman's status can be reviewed in 2 years, officials said.

Baseball

Atlanta Braves -- Agreed to terms with P Ben Rivera on a 1-year contract.

California Angels -- Agreed to terms with free-agent P Don Robinson (5-9 with a 4.38 ERA and 1 save for the San Francisco Giants) on a 1-year contract worth $900,000.

Chicago White Sox -- Exercised the 1992 options of P Donn Pall (7-2, 2.41 ERA) and OF Lance Johnson (.274, 72 runs).

Minnesota Twins -- Agreed to terms with IF Luis Quinones (.222 in 97 games with the Cincinnati Reds) on a minor-league contract with Class AAA Portland and invited him to spring training as a non-roster player.

Oakland Athletics -- Named Karl Kuehl special assistant for baseball operations and Keith Lieppman director of player development.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Agreed to terms with C Mike LaValliere (.298, 4 HRs, 41 RBI; led NL catchers in fielding percentage at .998) on a $6.3 million, 3-year contract. Agreed to terms with OF Cecil Espy on a 1-year contract and announced that Espy had accepted an assignment to Class AAA Buffalo.

Texas Rangers -- Agreed to terms with P Jeff Robinson (4-9, 5.18 ERA with the Baltimore Orioles) and P Jeff Sellers on contracts with Class AAA Oklahoma City.

Colleges

Lamar -- Announced the resignation of AD Gary Gallup.

Texas A&M -- Announced that redshirt freshman QB Jeff Granger (22-for-48 for 395 yards, 5 TDs) has quit football to concentrate on being a pitcher in baseball. He played for the U.S. team in the Pan American Games.

Texas-El Paso -- Announced that defensive coordinator Charlie Bailey resigned to take a similar job with the WLAF Orlando Thunder.

Football

NFL -- Named Denver Broncos QB John Elway to the AFC Pro Bowl team in place of Dan Marino, who is injured and will not play.

Chicago Bears -- Named Russ Riederer physical development coordinator.

Detroit Lions -- Placed WR Jeff Campbell (damaged knee cartilage) on IR. Activated WR Aubrey Mathews from IR.

Hockey

Chicago Blackhawks -- Recalled C Mike Stapleton and C Sean Williams from Indianapolis (IHL). Sent LW Dan Vincelette.

Hartford Whalers -- Reinstated LW Chris Govedaris from the suspended list and assigned him to Springfield (AHL).

Soccer

Baltimore Blast -- Signed M Ali Kazemaini (106 goals, 81 assists in 7 seasons).

Chicago Power (NPSL) -- Signed F Ken Snow to a 10-day contract.
