UMBC turns over a 93-63 decision to 8-1 Marquette

MILWAUKEE -- Coach Earl Hawkins said the biggest problem his Maryland Baltimore County team needs to solve when 1991 turns into '92 is turnovers.

Hawkins must have forgotten the fundamental aspect of getting defensive rebounds. Then again, maybe he's just trying to forget.

Turnovers and poor rebounding were again the culprits, as UMBC dropped a 93-63 decision to Marquette last night.

UMBC (1-7) came into the game averaging 22 turnovers and allowing 21 offensive rebounds a game. Marquette (8-1) was glad to take advantage of the Retrievers' generosity in both departments as it opened a 15-point halftime lead. UMBC had 11 turnovers and allowed Marquette 11 offensive rebounds in the first half.

Marquette opened the second half with an eight-point run. That gave the Warriors a 55-32 lead, and they were never threatened.

UMBC, which lost its fifth in a row, was led by Sony Nixon. Nixon, who came into the game averaging 18.2 points, finished with a game-high 20.

Marquette, which has won five in a row, was led by junior reserve forward Ron Curry's 19 points, a season high.

In an odd twist, Marquette was forced to wear its road uniforms, because its gold home uniforms look just like UMBC's "old gold" road uniforms.

It was the Retrievers' first game since the 13-point loss at Illinois on Dec. 21. After a nine-day break during Thanksgiving, UMBC surprised Towson State in the opening round of the Beltway Classic -- the Retrievers' only victory.

It was apparent early that the eight-day layoff left a fair amount of rust on the Retrievers' game.
