The American Legion Post is sponsoring the National High School Oratorical Contest, which can net a local student more than $18,000 in scholarship money.
Any high school student in grades 9 to 12 and a citizen of the United States is eligible.
The contest is meant to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States.
Other objectives include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think andspeak clearly and intelligently, and an appreciation of the duties, rights and privileges of American citizens.
The dates for the county and district competitions will be the first two weeks of February 1992.
The Legion's Department of Maryland will award the followingscholarships: first place, $2,500; second place, $1,000; third place, $500; fourth place, $300; and fifth through seventh, $200.
The state winner will receive an additional $1,000 scholarship for participating in the regionals.
