William & Mary football coach Jimmye Laycock is expected to meet with Maryland athletic director Andy Geiger today about Maryland's vacant head coaching job, a William & Mary spokeswoman said.
William & Mary sports information director Jean Elliott said last night that she had spoken with athletic director John Randolph yesterday, and he confirmed that Geiger had expressed interest in Laycock.
"I don't know when the contact was made, but John Randolph said he believed Laycock was being interviewed by Geiger today [Wednesday]," said Elliott.
Laycock, 43, is at least the fourth coach contacted by Geiger in the past week. Geiger was not available for comment last night. Laycock did not return phone calls.
Two other coaches known to be contacted by Geiger and still interested in the Maryland job are Holy Cross head coach Mark Duffner and Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. East Carolina coach Bill Lewis withdrew his name from consideration Monday afternoon. Last weekend, Geiger had asked East Carolina AD Dave Hart for permission to speak to Lewis.
Laycock's name often has been mentioned for openings around the country. One year ago today, he accepted the head coaching job at Boston College, but rejected the position a day later.
