Man, 34, Charged In 74-year-old's Assault

A Ferndale man has been charged with robbing and sexually assaultinga 76-year-old Ferndale woman three times in the last month.

The suspect, William Anthony Burgess, 34, of the 100 block of Linden Avenue was seen fleeing the woman's house early Saturday morning. He was arrested by county police after a brief footchase.

Burgess was charged with attempted burglary, burglary, robbery and sex offense.

A county police news release said that as the result of an investigation, the man also has been charged with burglary, robbery and sexually assault of the woman on two previous occasions, Nov. 24 and Nov. 28.

The victim was treated at North Arundel Hospital and released.

Police said Burgess was injured during the chase when he fell in arailroad bed under construction.


A Baltimore man was killed on Benfield Road on Saturday night when his car ran off the road, struck a tree and caught fire.

Joseph Scherba, 58, of the 900 block of Grove Hill Road was driving west on Benfield just past Governor Stone Parkway when his car left the right side of the road.
