Following the lead of New York, the Los Angeles Marathon is restructuring its prize money schedule, moving heavily into greatly increased incentives for the elite runners. It's the wrong way to go, but the organizers will soon find out . . . They're figuring on getting their customary 5,000 runners for the 13th Midnight Run in New York's Central Park New Year's Eve.

Race winners last weekend included Tom Brown and Eleanor Simonsick at Hunt Valley, Jason Cox and Bea Bradley at Marley's Station, Jim Otte and Margaret Cooper at the Harford Mall and Brad Uhfelder and Jenny Caple over the cross country course in Herring Run Park.
