Towson, UMBC may land in Big South Conference

December 12, 1991|By Paul McMullen

The commissioner of the Big South Conference said today that the league could soon make an announcement regarding the addition of Towson State and UMBC.

"I have a good feeling about that," Buddy Sasser said from conference headquarters in Myrtle Beach, S.C. "If, in the next couple of days, we get the final pieces put together, we hope to have an announcement of some kind."

Sasser said prospective members must apply for admittance, be endorsed by three existing members and then be voted in by a two-thirds vote. He said no vote has taken place.

Towson State and UMBC are both members of the East Coast Conference, which this year lost its automatic bid to the NCAA basketball tournament because of changes in its membership. Towson State athletic director Bill Hunter said last week that the university had planned to apply for admission to the Northeast Conference, but the NEC never received an application from the Tigers.
