5 Bridges Planned

Harford County is slated to get money to build five new bridges in the $151 billion, six-year transportation plan approved by Congress last month.

The bridges included in the plan are for Durham Road, near Upper Cross Roads; Furnace Road, near Jarrettsville; Southampton Road, in Bel Air; Wheel Road, in Abingdon; and Watervale Road, in Fallston.

Construction of the bridges has not been scheduled yet.


A Baltimore man has been indicted on homicide charges in Harford Circuit Court following an Oct. 5 accident in which an Abingdon woman was thrown from a motorcycle and killed.

Gerald N. Andrews Jr., 22, was charged Nov. 14 with homicide by motor vehicle while intoxicated and manslaughter by motor vehicle, court records say.

He also was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, exceeding reasonable and prudent speed, operating an uninsured vehicle, and driving while suspended, records say.

A trial has not been scheduled.

In the accident, Frances C. Smith, 29, was thrown from Andrews' motorcycle after he lost control of the bike along Route 24,near Rocks State Park, police said. The accident occurred at 2:45 a.m.

A test revealed that Andrews had a blood-alcohol content of 0.12,Curry said. The legal limit in Maryland is 0.10.

Neither Andrewsnor Smith was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.
