Chicago Cubs -- Signed free agent P Mike Morgan to a four-year contract worth 12.5 million.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Re-signed free-agent P Orel Hershiser to a 3-year contract and free agent P Tom Candiotti to a 4-year deal.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Announced the retirement of Fred Kuhlmann, president and chief executive officer, effective at the end of the year.


NBA -- Suspended Orlando Magic C Greg Kite for 2 games without pay and fined him $7,500, and Miami Heat C Rony Seikaly for 1 game without pay and fined him $5,000, for their roles in a fight in a game on Nov. 30. Fined Scott Skiles, Terry Catledge, Mark Acres and Morlon Wiley, Orlando players, and Steve Smith and Willie Burton, Miami players, $500 each for leaving the bench during the fight.

Los Angeles Clippers -- Activated F Charles Smith from the injured list and waived G Lanard Copeland.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Placed G Mitchell Wiggins on the injured list. Signed F Michael Ansley to a 1-year contract.


WBA -- Vacated the middleweight title held by Mike McCallum of Jamaica because he violated association rules.


Cal State Fullerton -- LHP Andy Weltlinger (Calvert Hall) signed a letter of intent.

San Diego State -- Extended the contract of Al Luginbill, football coach, through 1996.
