Manhattan beats Loyola, 79-75, in overtime in MAAC opener

Loyola College launched its basketball season with three straight losses against top-flight teams on the West Coast.

Last night, the Greyhounds found the game no more kind to them in the East.

They squandered a 14-point lead in regulation time, then fell to Manhattan in overtime, 79-75, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Reitz Arena.

It was not a pleasing outcome to Loyola coach Tom Schneider, who criticized his club afterward.

"We're 0-4; that's all I know," said Schneider. "I don't like that position with this team. We've got to find out a way to be better. I think we did too much talking about how good we were going to be."

Loyola never led in the extra period, but the Jaspers (2-2) had trouble putting away the victory because of their poor foul shooting.

But Russ Williams hit two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to produce the four-point margin.

The Greyhounds began the game without starting point guard Tracy Bergan, who missed the first half for disciplinary reasons.

Bergan said he "missed a curfew" on the West Coast trip. "It was against a team rule. The coach can't let a starter do that because we have so many new players."

"The whole thing is they [the Jaspers] are supposed to be pretty good in our league. We just didn't rise to the occasion."
