'Big man' Grzywacz boosts Hopkins over taller NYU, 57-48

December 04, 1991|By Jeff Fletcher

Frank Grzywacz is a giant. Not by Division I standards. In fact, not even by Division III standards.

Just watch him play, though. He's a giant.

Grzywacz, a 6-foot-4 sophomore center for the Johns Hopkins basketball team, was the key in beating a taller New York University team, 57-48, last night at Hopkins.

"He definitely plays bigger than he is," Hopkins coach Bill Nelson said. "He's one of those guys who you don't realize how valuable he is until after the game and you look at his numbers."

Grzywacz scored 15 points, including five during an 8-2 run that gave the Blue Jays an eight-point lead -- their largest of the game up to that point -- midway through the second half. He also led the Blue Jays with nine rebounds.

With 18 seconds to play in the game and the Blue Jays up by three, Grzywacz got a hand on a shot by NYU's Tom Brown, helping Hopkins (4-0) hold off the Violets' (4-1) late rally.

The Violets presented Hopkins with a problem it will have all season -- lack of size. The Blue Jays have only two players taller than 6-4, and one of them was injured last night. NYU, on the other hand, had three starters 6-5 or taller, including 6-8 center Jon Gabriel.

But for much of the early going, the Blue Jays found ways to pass the ball quickly around the Violets defense, setting up layups for Grzywacz and Jay Gangemi, who scored 10 points.

At the other end of the floor, the Violets could have taken control of the game if they had shot better. NYU missed shot after shot, both inside and outside. The Violets had second-chance shots -- they had a 22-15 rebounding edge in the first half -- but they couldn't make those either.

The Violets shot 27 percent from the floor in the game -- 14 percent in the second half.
